Where is Bergslagen?

The area of Bergslagen is located almost in the middle of Sweden. It is made up of the counties Gästrikland, Närke and Västmanland as well as southern Dalarna and half of Värmland. There are no clear boundaries. This area had everything needed to build an iron industry: mountains, forests and water. The industry was quite small at first, but grew larger and eventually became very important. Then it all came to an end – but maybe it will start again. There are signs. The mines in Bergslagen are reopening.

Bergslagen had and still has:
MOUNTAIN ROCK 

– where there is iron ore

FOREST

– providing wood for the fire and charcoal for the furnaces

WATER 

– streams and rapids that provide water power
